About Me

Who is Joselyn Calderón?

I'm Joselyn Calderon, currently working as the House Coordinator at Lauder College House at the University of Pennsylvania. On top of my position within College Houses & Academic Services, I am diligently working on an MSEd at Penn Graduate School of Education. I chose the Education, Culture, & Society (ECS) program because it was in-line with my academic interests. As an undergraduate Sociology student, I fell in love with research and ethnographic studies. The Sociology courses I took not only fed my curiosity towards understanding why culture and society fit together, they also taught me to understand the ways society changes over time and what provokes those changes. The ECS program so far has helped me expand that understanding into the realm of Education in order to better understand how events in the history of higher education inform the experiences students have today.

My experiences with undergraduate students in my current position at Lauder College House, my own undergraduate experience, and the classes I've taken so far in the ECS program have fostered an enthusiasm to work on a college campus after completing my Master's degree. Seeing how the College House communities help students of every background make the connections necessary for future academic and professional success by helping them establish close relationships with faculty and peers inspired me to seek a career where I would be able to further help students who don’t find themselves with as even a start as their peers. Getting to meet with different departments through my classes and learning more about the ways they support students has only further motivated me to keep on this path.

I don't think I would be where I am today without the personal and academic support of the living-learning community I was in at Penn. Ultimately, my career goals stem from wanting to provide that same support to students just starting at college who are experiencing similar difficulties to the ones I had..
